i'm maggie rodriguez. we have breaking news right off the bat. the crash of an ethiopian airliner over the mediterranean sea. let's take you to london for the latest from richard roth. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there are no reports of survivors and nothing conclusive yet about the cause of the crash. though lebanon's president says nothing points to sabotage or terrorism. heavy seas still lashed the mediterranean coast of lebanon this morning as some debris from the crash site washed ashore. ships at sea recovered several bodies. there have been thunder and rain and according to this eyewitness, a flash in the sky as the plane fell. the lebanese army said the plane was on fire shortly after takeoff. 90 people were on board the boeing 737 when it took off from beirut bound for addis ababa.
7:02 am
no americans were listed among the passengers. the plane had passed inspection just last month and aviation experts say ethiopian is a carrier with a good safety record. its last notable crash was this one in indian ocean in 1996 after hijackers stormed the cockpit. lebanese officials say the u.s. sixth fleet in the mediterranean is sending a naval team and a recognizance plane to aid in recovery at the crash site to continue looking for survivors and for the black box recording devices that may help explain what happened. maggie? >> and we will keep everyone posted throughout the program. cbs's richard roth in london. thanks. here at home, the economy is making news. it's expected to a busy week on wall street where eninvestors are hoping the bulls come back after the dow dropped to its lowest point in nearly a year last week. cbs's whit johnson is at the new york stock exchange with more. good morning, whit. >> reporter: if morning.

well, all eyes will be on wall street this morning after the dow plunged more than 500 points in three days late last week and then add to go unemployment concerns on sunday, the worldest large he retailer announced massive job can you tells. walmart is eliminating more than 11,000 jobs at its sam's club warehouse store, the majority are part-time workers who offer food samples and give in-store product demonstration. >> lots of hugs and lots of tears. we were really, really caught off guard and like i said, we were a close family. >> reporter: sam's club has underperformed walmart. to help get shoppers to spend more at its stores, the company has hired an outside marketing firm that specializes in product demonstrations. the dow plunged more than 4% last year, the biggest weekly drop since march. president obama's pledge to impose new banking regulations gave the markets the jitters as it news of ben bernanke's senate confirmation to a second term
7:04 am
might be in jeopardy. better manky's support of wall street bailouts has stirred public anger. >> the pact is that chairman bernanke was in charge when we hit the iceberg. and his policies were partially responsible for the meltdown that we experienced. >> reporter: but some worry that if bernanke isn't reappointed, it could be another bad week on wall street. white house officials say the fed chief is needed to ensure stability in the financial system. >> i think now would be a particularly bad time to send a signal to the international community and to our overall financial system by playing politics in any way with this upcoming vote. >> reporter: and bernanke's term expires at the end of this month. a vote on his reconfirmation is expected by the end of the week. maggie? >> and the markets seem to support him, but he still needs 60 smor stos vote for him. at last cherks he had 31 publicly supporting him.
7:05 am
does it look like it will go through? >> reporter: in recent days it's beginning to look a little bit more uncertain, but we do know the white house is applying pressure. president obama over the weekend was working the phones talks to senators trying to convince them that changing horses in midstream may not be a good idea and could have severe consequences with this fragile economy. so we'll have to wait and see what happens. >> seems to be going in his favor this morning. whit johnson, thank you. all right, thank you so much. president obama plans to relaunch his agenda during his state of the union address on wednesday. he'll focus on the economy, jobs and regaining the money mmentum has lost. bill hasn't has who are. >> reporter: he'll preview some of those messages. he wants to double the child care tax credit, he wants to have people who repay student loans repay them with a cap according to income, and he wants all employers to offer an ira savings option.
7:06 am
the president is on the defensive. he's trying to reconnect with millions of americans who voted for change but feel that they didn't get it. david plouffe, an architect of president obama's 2008 vehicle directory has been called back to oversee democrats' campaign strategy for the 2010 midterm election. plouffe wrote sunday in the "washington post," if democrats do what the american people sent them to washington to do, november will be nothing like the nightmare that talking heads have forecast. a "washington post" poll shows that almost two-thirds of brown voters in massachusetts were upset by the democrats' agenda including health care reform. >> president obama has essentially lost his real political base which is the center. >> reporter: and congressional democrats are feeling the heat. >> i think more than anything, the voters there said get busy in washington, do something about the economy. >> reporter: but the white house insists this won't an ban did not the fight for health care reform. >> he have to 2350i7bd a way to get this done, first of all, because it's the right thing for the country, but politically were we to caulk away now, it
7:07 am
would be devastating. >> reporter: white house press secretary robert gibbs was on the defensive blaming the bush administration. >> what we in-hair ritd was an economic situation that was far worse than anybody ever knew. nobody wanted to give money to stabilize the financial system. nobody wanted to ensure that two auto companies in this country didn't go out of business and go wrupt and we lose several hundred thousand more jobs. >> reporter: on top of all that if the president weren't so busy around here, state of the union message coming up and all that, he would have another appointment today. jury duty. back home in illinois. a summons from cook county came to his home in chicago, but he's apparently been excused. >> maybe he'd prefer pot to be. bill plante, thank you very much. now we want to bring in a couple of white house veterans and cbs news analysts, dee dee myers, former press secretary to president bill clinton, and dan bartle
7:08 am
bartlett, former adviser to president wush. dan, i'll start with you. your boss said i've got this political capital and i'm going to spend it. first question for you, dan, quickly, did this president misspend his political capital in his first year? >> absolutely. what he found out in his first year in office is that governing is a lot harder than campaigning. and he tried to press too much too fast. the type of change that the public wanted is not what they got in the first year. it felt a lot like politics as usual, a lot of democratic pebt up demands to do conventional pork barrel spending and overreaching of the government. what you're seeing now is a scaling back of that. we'll have to see if it works. >> very quickly then, dee dee, did this president misinvest his capital and if he has this chance to change, where should he spend it in this next year? >> i think they underestimated how important the economy was to voters and they underestimated how long and hard they'd have to fight to change the health care system, which is obviously
7:09 am
hugely important to voters and to the country's long term economic interests. what he needs to did now and what they are he starting to do is to refocus on the economy, to talk about job, to talk about ways to make the economy work for middle class americans in particular who feel like they've been left to float along on their own while wall street gets a huge bailout. so we'll see i think not a rebooting of obama 2.0, but subtle and consistent changes to makt economy work for middle class voters starting with last week and we'll hear more of it in the state of the question. >> the massachusetts showed if nothing else the middle is in charge. does the white house know that's the truth? >> that's what as dan pointed out that's what ekt lected president obama. he got a huge margin among independent voters and then obviously carried democrats and even some hrepublicans. he won by talking about the middle and in addition testifies that would help ordinary americans and it turns out as
7:10 am
most presidents find out, fixing washington is it a heck of a lot harder than it appears from the campaign trail. >> dan, are republicans interested in working with this president in the second year, are they happy to let him lose some more and hope to reap the benefit come november? >> well, it depends. if you're seeing now some of the coverage dau da that they're helping him make sure that chairman bernanke gets reconfirmed, but one concern i would have is that the administration and you heard in the package by bill plante, they're still defending this controversial health care bill. their big answer to the big defeat in massachusetts was that we need more poll tick, we're bringing back our campaign manage, david plouffe it to run the campaigns. it wasn't a substantive problem we had, it was a political problem. and i think that's going to be an error in not that the publi more poll tick, they want less. and this that will require this administration to scale back its more progressive and liberal ambitions and start to work together. >> will this president's approval ratings about 47% or
7:11 am
below a year from now? >> i believe it definitely will stay below 50% through november elections. depends on how he responds to those november elections if he's standing before the state of the union and whether he gets back over. >> and dee dee, very quickly. >> no rk, we've seen president obama as a candidate early in this presidency retool and readjust. the white house hears the message, they get that they haven't communicated effectively, that they need to retool a bit and without again a huge reintroduction, the subtle changes that the president will need to do including most importantly focusing on the economy and making it work for middle class voters. >> dee dee, dan, thank you so much for your time this morning. for more of today's headlines, erica hill is here at the news desk. good morning. intelligence officials today analyzing what appears to be the latest message from osama bin laden. broadcast yesterday that it appears to endorse the botched

security level from substantial to severe even before the latest message. based they say on increased chatter on terrorist networks they monitor. but with two high level conferences here this week on afghanistan and yemen, raising the threat level level was thought prudent temperature. >> we have to take the, necessary to show we're vigilant and to show people around the world that we must work together to deal with this terrorist tleft. wrrt another factor here, as well, the signs for the detroit attack were apparently missed by intelligence agencies. the approach now seems to be more cautious and more deliberate. erica? >> mark phillips in london this morning in that. world leaders gathering in montreal to discuss the relief efforts in haiti. nearly two week after the earthquake, over 600,000 haitians are still without shelter and those numbers are really just for the capital of port-au-prince. workers continuing to bury the
